How to keep gym members motivated during the holiday season

Every gym owner knows what happens when November and December roll around.
Schedules get packed. People start traveling. Work gets busy. And suddenly, some of your most consistent members are showing up a whole lot less.
It's pretty normal.
But here's where I think gym owners make a mistake.
They assume there's nothing they can do about it and just wait for January when everyone's ready to start fresh.
I wouldn't do that.
The last two months of the year are actually a great opportunity to keep your members engaged, strengthen your gym's community, and give people a reason to keep showing up.
And no, you don't need to launch some elaborate holiday fitness program to make it happen.
Here are six things I'd focus on.
And if you're looking for more gym marketing ideas throughout the year, follow Gym Content Co on Instagram. We're always sharing social media content ideas, fitness marketing tips, and inspiration for gym owners.
1. Make consistency the goal, not perfection
Let's be realistic.
Most people aren't going to maintain their exact workout routine during the holidays.
They've got family visiting, travel plans, work events, and about a hundred other things going on.
Instead of making members feel like they've failed because they missed a few workouts, encourage them to do what they can.
Two workouts a week are better than none. A quick 30-minute session still counts.
The goal isn't perfection. It's helping members maintain enough consistency that getting back into their normal routine doesn't feel impossible.
And honestly, that's a message worth sharing on your gym's Instagram, too.
2. Give members something to work toward
Sometimes people just need a little extra motivation.
A simple fitness challenge can give members a reason to keep showing up when their schedules start getting hectic.
You could try a November attendance challenge, a team workout competition, or a goal to complete a certain number of sessions before the end of the year.
It doesn't need to be complicated.
And you definitely don't need to give away an expensive prize.
A little recognition, some gym merchandise, or even bragging rights might be enough to get people involved.
We've actually written an entire article on how to run a gym fitness challenge that people actually finish, if you're looking for more ideas.
3. Make your gym somewhere people want to show up
This might sound obvious, but hear me out.
During the holidays, people have a lot competing for their time.
If going to the gym feels like another obligation, it's pretty easy to skip.
But if it's a place where members see their friends, enjoy their workouts, and feel part of something, they're much more likely to make time for it.
That doesn't mean you need to organize some massive event every weekend.
It could be a fun partner workout, a friendly competition between classes, or simply making an effort to recognize members who've been putting in the work.
Sometimes the little things are what keep people coming back.
And that's exactly why I think gym owners should spend just as much time thinking about member experience as they do about getting new leads.
4. Check in with members who have gone quiet
You know those members who used to show up every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday?
And now you haven't seen them in two weeks?
Reach out.
Not with some generic automated message telling them their attendance has dropped.
Something simple and personal.
“Hey, haven't seen you in a bit! Hope everything's going well. Would love to see you back in class soon.”
That's it.
People appreciate knowing someone actually noticed they weren't there.
And that personal connection is something a lot of larger gym chains struggle to replicate.

5. Use social media to keep your community connected
Your gym's Instagram shouldn't just be about attracting new members.
It's also a way to keep your current members involved, especially when they aren't showing up as often.
Share member milestones. Post photos from classes. Celebrate personal records. Show what's happening around the gym.
You could even use Instagram stories to ask members which classes they're planning to attend that week.
Nothing complicated.
The idea is to remind people that they're part of a community, not just paying for access to some equipment.
And if you're running out of things to post, we recently shared 20 November social media content ideas for gyms.
Plenty of simple ideas you can use without spending your entire afternoon making content.
6. Start talking about goals before January
Everyone loves the whole “new year, new me” thing.
But why wait until January 1 to start talking about goals?
Ask your members what they'd like to accomplish before the end of the year.
Maybe they want to improve their strength, run their first 5K, or simply get back into a consistent workout routine.
Your coaches can help them set realistic goals and make a plan.
And when January arrives, those members are already building momentum instead of starting from scratch.
That's a whole lot better than watching half your members disappear in December and hoping they come back after New Year's.
Don't forget about the members you already have
It's easy to get caught up in planning January promotions, creating new membership offers, and figuring out how to bring more people through your doors.
And those things matter.
But don't spend so much time chasing new members that you forget about the people who are already paying to be part of your gym.
Keep them engaged. Make them feel welcome. Give them something to work toward.
Because keeping a great member is just as important as signing up a new one.
And sometimes, a little extra effort during the busiest time of year can make a bigger difference than another membership promotion.
Need help keeping your gym's social media active?
